Business in Canada is constantly evolving and Northbridge is ready for the challenges this presents. I believe that we have the best team of talent amongst any SR&ED consultants in Canada. I am very proud of our team members, primarily of the passion they have shown to our clients. Our team members were also fully involved in the development of our new website, newsletter and expanded service offerings.

We are very pleased to announce the newest member of the Northbridge Team: Ajay Sinha, VP Operations. Ajay is an experienced manager with 18 years of professional management experience in consulting and directing manufacturing, production, financial and SR&ED operations in North America, Europe and Asia. In a short time, he has proven to be an integral addition to our consulting community, positioning us towards continued growth and expansion.

SR&ED Tax Credits for Work Performed Outside of Canada

As a result of the 2008 Federal Budget, claimants can now earn SR&ED investment tax credits (ITC) for work performed outside of Canada after February 25, 2008, up to 10% of the total salary or wages for SR&ED performed in Canada. (http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/txcrdt/sred-rsde/whtsnw/bdgtmpl-eng.html)

Streamlined SR&ED Processes

In Fall of 2008, a one-page outline of SR&ED program revisions will be released to announce changes to the SR&ED program. It is believed that this restructuring will focus on increased partner outreach, a simplified and streamlined claims process, and streamlined technical narrative requirements. New T661 Form Released

On November 10, 2008, a new T661 form was released by the CRA to streamline the SR&ED filing process.

 

Tips & Tricks

  • Have non-production personnel make notes of phone calls, thoughts, sketches, etc. within a personal log book or 'R&D letterhead' rather than on miscellaneous sheets that commonly become lost or disposed of
  • A picture is worth a thousand words – take pictures of any significant modifications, and remember to date these photographs. Photographic evidence is invaluable.
  • By spending 5-10 minutes a week summarizing SR&ED activities the ongoing nature of the project is substantiated and the work to prepare the claim is significantly reduced.

Facts & Figures

From 1997-1999, the Federal and Provincial Governments returned $1.3 Billion in refunds and credits to 11,000 qualified Canadian businesses. Based on these figures, the average return was $118,182.

In 2007, the Federal and Provincial Governments returned $4 Billion in refunds and credits.
