A Northbridge Success Story

Dental Lab Faced Heavy R&D Expenses

A small dental laboratory was struggling with the high costs of new development to stay competitive in the dental industry. New materials and processes in the preparation of dentures in turn lead to exhaustive research and experimentation aimed at improving performance, quality and efficiencies. As any business knows, heavy expenditures must be absorbed in order to stay afloat.

Expansion Beneficial Yet Costly

The main thrust for this company had been to expand its facilities and provide more employment for qualified technicians while becoming the leading facility in the country. However, it was going to take time for the progress made from the expansion of the lab and hiring of staff to pay for itself in sales.

Dental Lab Sees Six Figure Return

Northbridge worked very closely with the client to identify development work which would qualify under the federal SR&ED development work which would qualify under the federal SR&ED program. The account manager helped to prepare a claim that was highly successful in recovering hundreds of thousands of dollars for their development activities.

Funds Re-Invested, Business Advances

The return on their costly R&D activities allowed the client to reinvest in new technology and hire additional technicians to meet their goals of expansion, becoming a North American leader in their field.

Of Special Interest

September 2007 Fiscal Year Ends Due March 31

Just a reminder! SR&ED claims for fiscal years ending September 2007 are due no later than the 31st of March, 2009.

For SR&ED claims filed from Fiscal 2009, the new T661 must be submitted. The most significant change to the document is the inclusion of the technical narrative within the form. This brings about challenges as there are content limitations requiring a focus on the technological nature of the R&D projects.

  • Key project identifiers must first be established and correctly recorded.
  • In less than 350 words, state the technological advancement you were trying to achieve.
  • In less than 350 words, state the technological obstacles you had to overcome.
  • In less than 700 words, state the work performed to overcome the obstacles, demonstrate the systematic nature of the work and explain how the work contributed to the advancement of the scientific knowledge.

We have included a few CRA samples for your review. Do they meet the newly set narrative criteria?

Technological Advancement: “To develop a new and improved tail light that can be manufactured at a lower cost in order to stay competitive in the industry. We were successful in reaching our objectives. The unique and technologically advanced product is now being produced commercially with great success.”

Technological Obstacles: “We were uncertain if we could reach our objectives. This new process has never been attempted before. Our current knowledge did not allow us to do this. is has not been done anywhere in the world.”

Neither statement meets the strict requirements! With our knowledge and experience, Northbridge will work with you to develop a succinct SR&ED claim, ensuring that the critical technical submission meets the strict CRA guidelines.
